Every team starts with four buyer tiers — VIP, Gold, Silver, and Bronze — so you can rank buyers and find your best ones fast. Admins manage the list, and the team's deal marketing settings, from Settings > Buyers & Deal Marketing; everyone can apply a tier to a contact or company.
Managing your team's tiers
Each row shows how many contacts and companies are currently in that tier (a combined Buyers count) alongside its name and color.
From Settings > Buyers & Deal Marketing, admins can:
- Add tier — select the teal button, name it, and pick a color.
- Edit — open a tier's ⋯ menu and choose Edit to rename it or change its color.
- Reorder — use the up/down arrows on the left of each row to move a tier higher or lower in rank.
- Archive — flip the switch on a row off to archive a tier (or back on to restore it). An archived tier disappears from new picks but stays on any contact or company it's already assigned to. Buyers in an archived tier are left out of every buyer list email an automator sends.
Everyone who isn't an admin sees this list read-only.
Buyer tiers are specific to your team — they don't map to a shared, Ted-wide list the way Contact Types or Lead Sources do, and there's no "suggest a global value" option here.
The built-in Unverified tier
Below your own tiers, every team has one more: Unverified, marked Built in. It's where a buyer sits until you've ranked them:
- A contact or company you mark as a Buyer (or a contact you mark as an Investor) with no tier yet is placed in Unverified automatically. A tier you've already chosen is never changed.
- Adding a buy box to a contact or company marks them as a Buyer for you — so they land in Unverified too — unless they're already a Buyer or Investor. Adding a lending box marks them as a Lender.
- Unverified always stays last in the list. It can't be renamed, archived, moved, or deleted, so it has no arrows, switch, or ⋯ menu.
- Buyers in Unverified are never included in an email sent to a tier — not from the Contact Hub, not from a deal's Disposition tab, and not from an automator's buyer list. Move a buyer into one of your own tiers when you're ready to market to them. You can still email an Unverified buyer by checking their row and sending to the selection.
- Find buyers still shows Unverified buyers, each with an Unverified badge, so you can see and rank them. They get no tier boost.
- To move a buyer out of Unverified, work through the checklist on their Buyer tab — see Verifying buyers.
Setting a buyer's tier
Open a contact or company profile. Near the top, a Buyer tier dropdown shows a colored dot matching the tier's color. On a contact's profile page it appears when the contact has a Buyer (or Investor) tab — a contact with no buyer role doesn't show a tier. Select it to change the tier — the change saves immediately, with no separate save step. A Buyer you haven't ranked shows Unverified here, and a buyer always has a tier: No tier is only offered for a contact who isn't a Buyer themselves (someone who has a Buyer tab only through their company). You need edit access to Contacts to change it; everyone else sees the current tier as read-only text.
Opting a buyer out of deal marketing
On the same profile, an Opt out from deal marketing switch lets you exclude a buyer from marketing sends: "Skips this buyer on deal marketing sends. One-to-one and deal emails still go through." Turning it on only affects deal-marketing campaigns — direct one-to-one email and automator deal emails to that contact or company are unaffected. Their email address is skipped on every deal marketing send, including through a company whose only email is theirs — see Understanding deal marketing sends.
When a buyer unsubscribes themselves
Every deal marketing email includes an unsubscribe link in its footer (and one-click unsubscribe support in mail providers that offer it). The footer link opens a page with one Unsubscribe me button — the buyer is only unsubscribed once they press it, so a mail security scanner that opens the link can't unsubscribe them by accident. Once a buyer unsubscribes, their opt-out switch shows "Unsubscribed by the recipient on ⟨date⟩" instead of the usual helper text, and it's locked for everyone except admins. An admin who turns it back on sees a confirm dialog first, since re-enabling means the buyer starts receiving deal marketing emails again even though they asked to stop.
Setting up deal marketing (admins)
Below the tier list, an admin-only Deal marketing card sets what every deal-marketing campaign from this team needs before it can send:
- Footer address — your team's physical mailing address, required in every deal marketing email footer. A campaign can't be created until this is filled in.
- Daily cap per mailbox — the most deal marketing emails one sender's mailbox can send in a day (10–500, default 300).
- Send interval (seconds) — the minimum time between deal marketing sends from the same mailbox (20–300 seconds, default 30).
These settings apply to every deal marketing campaign sent from this team, regardless of who starts it.
Sending a deal to a list of buyers
Once your team has a footer address set up (above) and you have a connected mailbox, you can send one deal to many buyers at once — as an individual email to each buyer, paced from your own mailbox, never a group BCC. Three places open the same Send this deal to buyers dialog:
- Find Matches — open Find buyers from a deal, check the buyers you want (only rows with an email on file can be selected), and select Send this deal to N selected at the bottom.
- Contact Hub — either filter the Contacts tab by one or more tiers and select Send a deal to N buyers in the header, or check the contacts and companies you want — across as many pages, filters, and views as you like — and select Send a deal in the bar above the tabs. A checked selection always wins over the tier filter. Anyone in the selection without an email, or who has opted out, is counted up front ("3 of 41 have no email and will be skipped", "2 have opted out and will be skipped") and left out of the send. You'll pick which deal to send from inside the dialog. See Selecting contacts and sending a deal.
- A deal's Disposition tab — select Send to buyers in the Buyer Sends section and pick a tier.
The tier choices are your own tiers. Unverified isn't offered, and buyers in it are left out of a tier send.
In the dialog, pick an email template (Buyer or General category), check the live preview, then review the summary line — how many buyers, roughly how long the send will take, which mailbox it's sending from, and how many were skipped for having opted out — before selecting Send. If your mailbox isn't connected or your team's footer address isn't set yet, the dialog tells you and links to where to fix it.
See Understanding deal marketing sends for why sends are paced, the difference between a buyer opting out and a buyer unsubscribing themselves, and what each pause reason on a campaign means.
Tracking a send
Every deal with a buyer send shows a Buyer Sends section on its Disposition tab: one card per campaign with its status (Queued, Sending, Paused, Completed, or Canceled), a live sent/total progress bar, and — once it has sent — how many buyers opened it and clicked a link ("Opened 12 · Clicked 5"). Select a card to expand the full list of recipients and see each one's status and when they opened or clicked (see Understanding deal marketing sends for why opens are an estimate). A campaign automatically pauses if the sending mailbox hits a provider limit or the send fails several times in a row — the card shows why. The person who started the campaign, the mailbox it's sending from, or a team admin can Pause, Resume, or Cancel it at any time; canceling skips everyone who hasn't been sent to yet, but doesn't recall emails already sent.
Finding buyers by tier on the Contact Hub
On the Contacts page, a Tier filter next to the Type and Market filters lets you narrow the list to one or more tiers. The table also shows a Tier column with each contact's colored dot — select the column header to sort the whole list by tier (untiered contacts sort last) — and an Opted out badge next to the name of any contact who's opted out of deal marketing.
Filtering and boosting buyer matches by tier
Find buyers (opened from Contact Hub or a deal) has its own Tier filter — pick Any tier, or a specific tier like Gold+ to see that tier and everything ranked above it (an untiered buyer drops out of the list once any tier filter is set). Every matched row shows the buyer's tier as a colored dot and name next to their name, when they have one; a buyer still in Unverified shows an Unverified badge instead.
Admins can also turn on Weight tier in match score from the same Settings > Buyers & Deal Marketing page (below the tier list, next to the Deal Marketing card) — "Higher-tier buyers score higher and rank first, on top of the usual buy-box criteria." When it's on, Find Matches shows a small Tier boost on label above the results, and a better tier always earns a bigger boost than a worse one. When it's off, tier is still used to break ties between two buyers with the same match score, but otherwise has no effect on ranking.
